Former broadcaster, freelance journalist and public affairs executive, Ken Hardie is serving his third term as the Liberal Member of Parliament for the Fleetwood – Port Kells federal constituency in Surrey, BC. He is also in his third term as a member of the parliamentary Standing Committee on Fisheries & Oceans and currently serves as the Chair of the Special Committee on the Canada-People's Republic of China Relationship.

A native of Alberta, Ken has spent most of his life in the lower mainland of British Columbia. He graduated from West Vancouver Senior Secondary School and went on to study Economics at the University of British Columbia. His first career, though was in radio, first as a producer of open line programs and then as an on-air host and program manager at stations in Northern BC, Northwest Ontario, Manitoba and finally in Kamloops.

After broadcasting, Ken joined the corporate communication staff at the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, supporting successful road safety and anti-fraud programs; eventually heading the public affairs department. Similar roles followed at the Vancouver Police Department and at the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (TransLink), where he served as Director of Communication until retiring in mid-2013. He was active in the International Association of Business Communicators, as a life member of the International Association for Public Participation and as President of the BC branch of Canadian Public Relations Society.

With this communication experience, Ken’s focus has been to stay closely connected to constituents in Fleetwood – Port Kells. While he invests significant time to ensure constituents are kept up to date on parliamentary developments, his priority is to make sure the voices of people at home are heard in caucus, at the Cabinet and by the Prime Minister. Staff in Ottawa and in Surrey have earned a solid reputation for being available and responsive, and for helping people solve problems or take advantage of opportunities provided by government programs.

In his Fisheries & Oceans committee work, Ken has initiated important studies focusing on the health and sustainability of BC’s fish stocks and on the wellbeing of the communities that depend on this resource for their livelihoods. As Chair of the Special Committee on the Canada-People's Republic of China Relationship, he has worked to examine and understand the nature of Canada's economic, social and cultural linkages to the People's Republic of China, and its impact on Canadian residents, particularly those of Chinese descent.

Ken entered politics in 2015 because he believed Canada needed a government that saw Canadians as not just ‘consumers and taxpayers’ but as citizens of a nation that believes strongly in ‘the common good’. Proof of this belief is clear as our government leads Canada through a period of unprecedented challenges, and as Canadians respond with the hope and hard work that will ensure our success.
