March 31st marks International Transgender Day of Visibility, which is an annual event dedicated to celebrating the lives and contributions of transgender and non-binary individuals.
It also aims to raise awareness of the struggles and discriminations faced by transgender and non-binary individuals worldwide.
In 2021, Canada became the first country to provide census data on transgender and non-binary individuals. This two-step approach allows Statistics Canada to have reliable data on the transgender and non-binary population and help address information gaps about gender diversity in Canada. This provides a more comprehensive picture of the growing diversity of Canadian families.
The International Transgender Day of Visibility celebrates Trans people and reaffirms their belonging in our communities. Our government will continue to support the 2SLGBTQI+ community, including trans individuals and drag performers, because every time a person feels free to affirm who they are or love who they love, our country is stronger for it.
