Today marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. This day represents a major global annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, corporations, opinion leaders and local authorities to the alarming situation faced by people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.
We must recognize the courage and resilience of LGBTQ2 community members of the past and present who have fought for equity and against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
Today is a reminder that LGBTQ2 communities continue to experience significant disparities in all aspects of our society. May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
Homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, biphobia, and all forms of violence and racism have no place in Canada, or around the world.
Our government is committed to improving equity for LGBTQ2 communities through the promotion of human rights and the development of inclusive federal policies, programs, and laws.
