Today marks the start of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) Mental Health Week. This year’s campaign is all about encouraging empathy, truly listening to others, and inspiring people to #GetReal about their mental health and how to best support one another.
The pandemic has taken a considerable toll on our collective well-being, with many people across Canada continuing to report an increase in anxiety, depression, loneliness, and grief. The pandemic has also intensified challenges regarding substance use and the overdose crisis. Now more than ever, it is critical that everyone in Canada has access to the services and supports they need, when they need them.
That’s why our government launched Wellness Together Canada (WTC), a free and confidential online portal that provides 24/7 access to a virtual network of mental health and substance use supports. People across Canada can also access PocketWell, WTC’s companion app, to monitor their mood and access mental health supports right from their phones.
Indigenous Peoples who need immediate emotional support, crisis intervention, or referrals to community-based services can access experienced and culturally sensitive help line counsellors through the Hope for Wellness Help Line at 1-855-242-3310 or online at www.hopeforwellness.ca.
To access free mental health and addictions programs, services and supports tailored to the needs of your local community, you can also contact your local CMHA.
Our government recognizes that mental health is health. As we continue to fight COVID-19 and build a brighter and healthier tomorrow, we’ll continue to do whatever it takes to support Canadians’ mental health and ensure that mental health care is treated as a full and equal part of our universal health care system.
It’s okay to reach out and ask for help. Confidential, 24-hour mental health services are available to you.
