Today, we commemorate the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, one of the most important battles in Canadian military history. That day, Canadians from every corner of our country began forging Canada’s reputation as a country that stands up for peace and freedom in the world.
The majestic and inspiring Canadian National Vimy Memorial stands on the highest point of Vimy Ridge in the French countryside. On the monument’s base are inscribed the names of the 11,285 Canadians killed during the First World War whose final resting place was unknown.
At a time of great instability in the world, join me in remembering the heroism and sacrifices of those who fought so hard to help secure peace in Europe during the First World War.
To commemorate this battle, we invite you to visit the Remembering Vimy Ridge website to learn more.
You can also visit the Canadian Virtual War Memorial to see the names of those who died that day in 1917 or check out The Vimy Foundation’s new app that goes live today, to take a virtual tour of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
Lest we forget.
