Important information for Passport applications
March 19, 2022
We are strongly encouraging Canadians to submit passport applications well in advance of making travel plans. When possible, we encourage Canadians to renew or apply for their passport two to three months prior to travel. This will help mitigate potential issues and delays for travellers.

Due to a number of factors including the easing of travel restrictions, March break and Easter approaching, Service Canada is experiencing a surge of passport applications. As Canadians prepare for a return to travel, here are some resources to help ensure you have your passport in time.

One can apply for passport by:
• For urgent travels, call the Passport Call Centre (travelling within 2 days)
• Booking an appointment on eServiceCanada  (travelling within 25 days)
• Mailing in applications (travelling beyond the next 25 days)
• In-person by visiting any Service Canada Centre (travelling beyond the next 25 days).

If anyone requires a passport within the next two business days, they should contact the Passport Call Centre at 1-800-567-6868 for assistance. Service Canada will make arrangements for the person to have their passport printed before the travel date. The client must show proof of travel and need.

Those travelling within the next 25 business days must apply in person at a Service Canada Centre – Passport Service office, by appointment only.  The form to request an appointment is available at Home - E-service Canada.ca and you must show proof of travel or need.

Those travelling beyond the next 25 business days can apply by visiting a Service Canada Centre or by mailing in their application. No proof of travel or need required. Appointments are recommended as walk-in service is offered only if capacity allows.

For Indigenous communities and vulnerable clients, such as seniors and persons with disabilities, the Service Canada Outreach Support Centre toll-free (1-877-631-2657) telephone service ensures access to service specifically for clients who may have difficulties accessing services online.

All Information on how to apply and obtain a passport application form can be found online on Canada.ca.

Checking on status of a Passport application:

Canadians seeking information on the status of their application should wait 20 business days before contacting the Passport Program if they have applied by mail, and 10 business days if they’ve applied in person. A status request can be submitted online on Canada.ca. Status requests of passport applications are usually processed within three business days from Monday to Friday during regular business hours.
