Healthy Communities Initiative announces funding in Surrey
March 7, 2022

On Thursday, March 3rd, Jennifer O’Connell, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities joined the Community Foundations of Canada to announce projects funded through the 2nd round of the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative (CHCI). The Healthy Communities Initiative is a $31 million investment from the Government of Canada to transform public spaces in response to COVID-19.

As part of this announcement, the Beyond Our Walls campaign of the NightShift Street Ministries Society in Surrey was selected for funding.

The Beyond Our Walls initiative is the purchase and fabrication of a new mobile food truck to be used for providing hot meals and outreach services in Surrey. The project will improve and expand the delivery of evening hot meal outreach, focused on people experiencing homelessness, addiction, poverty, and mental illness. With over $74,000 in funding, NightShift will be able to bring their hot meal outreach and volunteer services outside and expand into other areas of Surrey.

As Canadians continue to adapt to the realities of COVID-19, local governments and community partners across the country are adapting their spaces and services to keep residents safe and healthy, support economic recovery, create jobs, and build vibrant, resilient communities.

The Canada Healthy Communities Initiative is supporting projects across the country that build more inclusive communities and ensure a higher quality of life for Canadians. Investments like the one announced in Surrey are vital to strengthening communities and ensuring they are resilient today and for years to come.

If you or someone you know would like to volunteer with this cause, visit the NightShift Street Ministries Society website.
