Canada announces additional humanitarian support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia
March 1, 2022

Canada stands united with those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Today, Minister Sajjan announced an additional $100 million in humanitarian support to help experienced partners address the most pressing humanitarian needs on the ground in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. This support will help provide emergency health services (including trauma care), protection, support to displaced populations and essential life-saving services such as shelter, water and sanitation, and food.

Today, Ministers Alghabra, Joly, and Murray announced that the Government of Canada intends to ban Russian-owned or registered ships and fishing vessels in Canadian ports and internal waters. Our government will continue taking part in ongoing coordinated efforts among G7 partners and like-minded countries to hold Russian leadership accountable for its escalating aggression.

Humanitarian support for Ukraine:

The additional $100M in humanitarian assistance for Ukraine announced today will go to help experienced partners, such as the United Nation’s Ukraine Humanitarian Fund, the World Food Program (WFP), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UNHCR, to address the most pressing humanitarian needs on the ground in Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

This support will help provide emergency health services (including trauma care), protection, support to displaced populations and essential life-saving services such as shelter, water and sanitation, and food.

This funding builds on the$10M matching commitment with the Canadian Red Cross and the $50M in development and humanitarian aid that was previously announced.

Prohibiting Russian ships and fishing vessels from entering Canadian ports and internal waters:

Russia must be held accountable for its unjustified and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

Government of Canada is taking steps to close Canadian waters and ports to Russian-owned or registered ships and fishing vessels, in coordination with our G7 partners and other like-minded countries.

Canada condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and we will continue to take action to stand with Ukraine.
