UPDATE - Canada’s response to the crisis in Ukraine
February 28, 2022

Canada’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine includes:

  1. Condemnation of Russia, its President, Vladimir Putin and high-ranking government officials involved in preparing and launching the invasion;
  2. Financial support for the Ukrainian government by way of loans, loan guarantees or other foreign aid;
  3. Providing weapons that allow Ukraine to defend itself;
  4. Financial sanctions against certain people and Russian banks, intended to:
    • Freeze the assets of wealthy, influential individuals who might be able to convince President Putin to cease the invasion
    • Threaten Russia’s economy by reducing or eliminating its financial system’s access to worldwide money transactions and world trade as a way to damage its economy
  5. Allowing Ukrainian citizens in Canada to remain and work to support themselves;
  6. Opening ways for immediate family members (spouses and dependent children) of Ukrainians with Canadian citizenship or Permanent Resident status to come to Canada as refugees.
