Federal minimum wage to rise to $15 per hour
December 17, 2021

For Canadians supporting their families with minimum-wage jobs, every dollar can make a difference. That’s why our government promised a federal minimum wage of $15 per hour, tied to inflation, to support Canadian workers and their families.

This new minimum wage will come into force on December 29th, 2021, and will affect workers in the federally regulated private sector.

Canada's prosperity depends on every Canadian having a fair chance to succeed. For those Canadians supporting their families in minimum-wage jobs, every dollar can make a difference, whether it be at the grocery store, buying school supplies, or affording rent.

That's why our government took decisive action to establish a federal minimum wage with Budget 2021, and to tie it to inflation.

Every April 1st, beginning 2022, the federal minimum wage will be adjusted based on Canada's Consumer Price Index for the previous calendar year.

These steps reflect our government's efforts to ensure that workers in federally-regulated industries have robust and modern labour standards that reflect the realities of our Canadian lifestyles.
