June 21st marks National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD), a time to honour the rich cultures, unique traditions, and important contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada.
Today is an opportunity to not only acknowledge the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and allow space to reflect on the ways in which colonialism has and continues to affect Indigenous ways of life, but more importantly to celebrate the bright future and resiliency of Indigenous Peoples.
For the rest of Indigenous History Month, I encourage you to continue participating in #IndigenousReads by visiting a local bookstore and picking up something by an Indigenous author. You can find suggestions here, and don't forget to use #IndigenousReads when sharing on social media.
Across the country, there are events commemorating the unique heritage, history and remarkable achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Explore the interactive map to find activities happening in our Fleetwood—Port Kells community.
Today, and everyday, let’s reflect on reconciliation and the bright cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.
