Today, the Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, Hon. Ahmed Hussen, announced the Government of Canada’s additional investment of $118.2 million over seven years for Phase 2 of the Federal Community Housing Initiative (FCHI). This funding will be directed at former federally administered housing providers whose agreements expired prior to April 1, 2016.
This investment will help maintain the affordability of 18,000 homes; provide rent support for individuals living in federally administered housing; create long-term support in the community housing sector; and secure rental assistance for a longer period.
The Federal Community Housing Initiative delivers rental assistance to families in deep-housing need by addressing the gap of co-ops and non-profits whose agreements expired prior to 2016. This allows for continuity of the much needed rental support to vulnerable Canadians.
The Government of Canada’s investment of $118.2 million, in addition to the $500 million already directed to the Federal Community Housing Initiative, will support a total of 73,000 Canadian households. This will enable housing co-operatives to have more stable communities and plan for the future.
Enrolment packages will be sent to housing providers that are deemed eligible in the coming weeks. You can find out more about the Eligibility and Enrolment process here.
